Biography

Dr. Cynthia James was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rembert. Her mother, Thelma Edwards Rembert, has passed away, and there is no information about her father.

She went to Wesleyan University in Middleton, CT, where she earned her BSC in Psychology. Later, she pursued her masters and doctorate in Psychology at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.

In 1993, Dr. James attended United Theological Seminary, where she obtained her Master in Divinity.

Family Life

She’s been married to Alvin James for 51 years, and they both take joy in the accomplishments of their three grown-up children.

Career

According to Jakes Divinity School, Dr. James has helped more than 2,000 congregations worldwide by offering practical theological training and support for leadership development and congregational health. She has spoken nationally and internationally, including in Finland, Estonia, various cities in South Africa, Istanbul, and many places in the Caribbean and Virgin Islands.

Dr. James played a key role in starting new churches and providing care to pastors in the Western Region of the U.S, including Hawaii and Guam. She has also supported missionaries in 94 different countries.

Throughout her career, Dr. James has taught at several universities, including Rutgers University, The University of Pittsburgh, California State University East Bay, Simpson College, and Allegheny Community College.

Currently, she has been the Associate Pastor/Director of Education at The Potter’s House in Dallas for over 7 years. Additionally, she serves as the Advisor for Academic Affairs at Jakes Divinity School.

Honors and Awards

She’s received many awards, such as Woman of the Year in Pittsburgh, PA, a National Science Fellowship, Danforth Scholar, Educational Testing Service Intern, and the esteemed United States President’s Volunteer Action Award.

Dr. James has held notable roles, including being a board member for the Family Research Council, an Earl Lecturer for the Graduate Theological Union, and a Guest Graduate Lecturer for Princeton University Seminary. She has also presented papers at Boston University and the University of Maryland.

She was honored to become an Honorary Member of the United States Army 3rd Brigade, 91st Division (Training Support). Dr. James values her roles as a preacher and lecturer at the Hampton Minister’s Conference and as an expert consultant for educational and faith-based TV and movie productions.

Additionally, she was featured in a 26-week preaching series on Christian Television and hosted two radio broadcasts (the most recent broadcast finished a six-year run).

Furthermore, she is deeply interested in Practical Theology, Pastoral Care (including Spiritual Formation), executive leadership development, and promoting a Psycho-Theological approach to scripture.
