Biography
Kay Warren, born Elizabeth Kay Lewis on February 9, 1954, hails from San Diego, California, and is the daughter of Reverend B. LaVern and Bobbie Lewis. She pursued her education at California Baptist College (now University) in Riverside, California, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Los Angeles in 1976.
Known as a prominent Christian author, speaker, and mental health advocate, Kay Warren and her husband Rick gained fame with Rick’s bestselling book, “The Purpose Driven Life,” which had a widespread impact in the global Christian community.
Beyond her literary and speaking endeavors, Kay actively engages in philanthropy and advocacy, especially in the areas of HIV/AIDS awareness and mental health. She played a significant role in co-founding the HIV/AIDS Initiative at Saddleback Church and has been a vocal advocate for reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.

Pastor Warren co-founded Saddleback Church, the sixth-largest evangelical megachurch in the United States, headquartered in Lake Forest, California.
Saddleback Church began as a Bible study group in 1980 with seven members, and its first service was held on Easter Sunday in a high school gym. By 2017, the church had grown to 22,000 attendees.
In 2004, Kay initiated HIV/AIDS and orphan care programs at Saddleback Church, fostering collaboration between commercial, governmental, and religious sectors through civil forums and international summits. Guests at these events included President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain, Bono, Ambassador Mark Dybul, and Dr. Peter Piot.
After her son Matthew’s suicide in 2013, Kay focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. She launched the Hope for Mental Health Initiative at Saddleback Church in 2014 and joined the executive committee board of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention.
Recognized for her influence, Kay Warren was listed on the Orange County Register’s 100 Most Influential People List in 2016. In 2022, after 40 years of leadership, Kay and her husband, Pastor Rick Warren, retired from Saddleback Church, passing on leadership to Pastor Andy Wood and his wife.
